Why Mawson and Woden Search for Curry Restaurants

Canberra nights get cold for most of the year. A hot curry warms you up fast. Mawson sits inside the Woden Valley, close to Woden, Curtin, Farrer, and Phillip. People in these suburbs search for curry near them all year round. Most of them do not know a Nepali kitchen can serve that same craving, with a fresher, lighter twist. That gap is exactly why this guide exists: to show curry lovers in Mawson and Woden a new place to eat well.

Mul Chowk Kitchen: Your Nepali Restaurant in Mawson

Mul Chowk Kitchen opened in Mawson in 2022. Our sister restaurant has served Campsie, Sydney, since 2017. Our Mawson restaurant is fully licensed, so we pour beer, wine, and cocktails at the bar. We also host live music nights through the month. Groups can book our private function space for parties or work events, and guests can sit outside on warm days.

The Story Behind the Name Mul Chowk

Mul Chowk means “main courtyard” in Nepali. The name comes from the old Mulchowk Palace inside Kathmandu’s Durbar Square. Malla kings once used this courtyard for royal ceremonies. UNESCO now lists Kathmandu Durbar Square as a World Heritage Site. We chose this name to carry that royal history into every dish we cook in Mawson.

Nepali Curry vs Indian Curry: What Is the Real Difference?

Nepal sits right next to India, so the two cuisines share some spices. But Nepali curry is not the same as Indian curry. Nepali curry uses less cream and less oil. It leans on fresh herbs, ginger, garlic, and timur, a sharp Himalayan pepper. Indian curry often leans on richer, creamier gravies. If you already love Indian curry, Nepali curry gives you a lighter, fresher version of that same warm flavour.

Spices That Give Nepali Curry Its Flavour

Nepali curry gets its taste from a mix of whole and ground spices. Cooks toast cumin and coriander first. Then they add turmeric, garlic, and ginger. Many dishes finish with a pinch of timur, a citrusy Himalayan pepper. Some recipes also use jimbu, a dried herb grown high in the Himalayas. Together, these spices build a flavour you will not find in most Indian curry houses.

SpiceRole in the Dish
CuminToasted first for a nutty base
CorianderAdds an earthy, citrus note
TurmericGives colour and mild bitterness
TimurAdds a sharp, citrus tingle
JimbuA dried Himalayan herb for depth
