The Himalayan Dumpling
What Are Momos?
Momos are traditional Nepalese and Himalayan dumplings made with a thin wheat flour wrapper, filled with minced meat or vegetables, and typically steamed, fried, or pan-fried. They are served with achar — a spicy, tangy dipping sauce made from tomatoes, sesame seeds, and timur (Sichuan pepper).
Originating in Tibet, momos spread throughout the Himalayan region including Nepal, Bhutan, and parts of India. Today, momos are considered a staple of Nepalese cuisine and are widely recognized as a signature dish of Nepal.
In Australia, momos have become increasingly popular as more people discover the authentic flavours of Himalayan cuisine. At Mul Chowk Kitchen, we bring the taste of Kathmandu to Sydney and Canberra, serving handmade momos prepared with traditional recipes and fresh ingredients.
From the Himalayas to Australia
The History of Momos
Momos originated in Tibet over 1,000 years ago, most likely influenced by Chinese dumpling traditions that traveled with Mongol traders in the 13th century. The name “momo” comes from the Tibetan word “mog mog,” meaning “steamed bread.”
According to legend, a 7th-century Nepali princess named Bhrikuti, who married a Tibetan king and introduced Buddhism to Tibet, may have also brought momo-making traditions with her. Whether fact or folklore, this illustrates how deeply intertwined momos are with Himalayan cultural exchange.
The Newar community of the Kathmandu Valley played a crucial role in popularizing momos in Nepal. These skilled merchants frequently traveled between Lhasa and Kathmandu, bringing back culinary traditions from their Tibetan trading partners. Over time, Nepali cooks adapted the recipe to local tastes, creating the distinctive round shape (as opposed to the half-moon Tibetan version) and incorporating more aromatic spices and herbs.
By the 1960s, momos had become firmly established as a beloved snack in Nepal, particularly in urban areas where street vendors served them fresh from bamboo steamers. Following the 1959 Tibetan uprising, Tibetan refugees settled in Nepal and India, bringing their culinary expertise and further enriching the momo tradition.
Today, momos have achieved international recognition, appearing on menus from New York to Melbourne. In Australia, Nepali restaurants like Mul Chowk Kitchen have introduced authentic momo traditions to a food-loving audience eager to explore new flavors and culinary experiences.

What Makes Them Different
What Makes Nepalese Momos Unique
Fresh Dough, Hand Folded
Our momos are made with fresh dough prepared daily — rolled thin by hand to create delicate wrappers that don’t overpower the filling. Unlike frozen or mass-produced dumplings, our wrappers are translucent and tender.
Traditional Himalayan Spices
We use authentic Nepalese spices including timur (Sichuan pepper), cumin, coriander, fresh ginger, and garlic. The spice blend is balanced to enhance, not overwhelm, the natural flavours of the filling.
Homemade Achar
No momo is complete without achar — our signature dipping sauce. Made fresh daily with roasted tomatoes, sesame seeds, timur, and Himalayan spices, it adds the perfect tangy, spicy finish.
Traditional Steaming
We steam our momos in traditional bamboo and metal steamers, preserving moisture and creating that signature tender texture. This method, used for generations in Nepal, is healthier than frying and allows the filling to shine.
