Best Nepali Food Near Belmore & Canterbury: Mul Chowk Kitchen Campsie Guide

The best Nepali food near Belmore and Canterbury is at Mul Chowk Kitchen, 66 Evaline Street, Campsie NSW 2194. We are only about 1.5 to 2 km from both suburbs, which is roughly a 5 minute drive along Canterbury Road. We are open every day from 11:00 am to 9:30 pm.

Belmore and Canterbury sit on either side of Campsie. Most locals have passed within a few hundred metres of our door many times without stopping. This guide explains what you have been missing, and how to get here.

Where Belmore and Canterbury Sit, Relative to Campsie

We are genuinely close to both:

  • From Belmore: about 1.5 to 2 km. A 5 minute drive along Canterbury Road.
  • From Canterbury: about 2 km in the other direction. Also around 5 minutes by car.
  • From Roselands or Clemton Park: under 10 minutes.
  • From Hurlstone Park: a short drive across the river.

There is street parking on and around Evaline Street, which is usually easier than Beamish Street in the evening.

Important: The Train Line Is Closed Right Now

Belmore, Campsie, and Canterbury were all on the old T3 Bankstown train line. That line closed in September 2024. All three stations are shut while the route is rebuilt as a Sydney Metro.

Metro trains are expected to start running in late 2026. When they do, Campsie will be one quick Metro stop from both Belmore and Canterbury, and reaching us will be easier than ever.

Until then, Transport for NSW runs replacement buses along the old route, and regular buses run along Canterbury Road. For most people, the 5 minute drive is simplest. Check Transport for NSW for current times before you travel.

Belmore’s Food Scene, and Why Nepali Food Is Different

Belmore has a strong South Asian food presence of its own, especially around the station, with Bangladeshi and Indian kitchens well established there.

Nepali food does not compete with those. It is a genuinely different cuisine. It sits closer in spirit to Tibetan and high-altitude cooking than to a curry house or biryani shop.

Here is what sets it apart:

  • Lighter, thinner sauces rather than heavy, creamy gravies.
  • Dumplings at the centre. Momo is the national dish, not a side.
  • Smoky grilling. Sekuwa is cooked over real heat.
  • Timur pepper, which gives a gentle tingle you will not find elsewhere.
  • Buffalo meat (buff), a traditional Nepali choice.
  • Fermented greens like gundruk, unique to Himalayan cooking.

If you already love the food around Belmore station, this is a new direction rather than more of the same.

Canterbury’s Quiet, Riverside Character

Canterbury has a different feel to Belmore. It is less concentrated around one food strip and more spread across quiet, leafy streets near the Cooks River and its walking trails.

That is lovely for a walk, but it means fewer dinner options close to home. A five minute drive along Canterbury Road closes that gap easily.

Many Canterbury families make an evening of it. A walk along the Cooks River path, then dinner with us in Campsie.

What to Order First

New to Nepali food? These are the dishes our Belmore and Canterbury guests order most:

  • Steamed Momo (from $13.98) — soft, hand-folded dumplings. The best place to start.
  • Jhol Momo (from $15.98) — dumplings in a warm, spicy tomato and garlic broth.
  • Sekuwa (from $17.99) — smoky char-grilled chicken or mutton skewers.
  • Thakali Thali Set (from $23.99) — a full platter with rice, dal, curry, greens, and pickle.
  • Goat Curry ($20.99) — slow-cooked with Himalayan herbs.
  • Buff Sukuti Sadheko ($24.99) — dried buffalo meat tossed with mustard oil. A proper Nepali favourite.

Not sure what to pick? Ask our staff. They are used to guiding first-time visitors, and a shared starter platter is an easy way to try several dishes at once. Browse the full Nepali menu before you come.

Vegetarian and Vegan Options

Belmore and Canterbury both have growing vegetarian communities, and our menu suits that well.

  • Veg Momo (from $13.98) — filled with cabbage, carrot, and onion.
  • Daal Fry Curry ($13.99) — warm, comforting lentils.
  • Mixed Veg Curry ($13.99) and Paneer Butter Masala ($19.99).
  • Veg Thakali Thali Set ($23.99) — the full vegetarian platter.
  • Samosa ($7.99) and Vegetable Pakora ($9.99) to share.

Many dishes can be made vegan on request. Some traditional tempering uses ghee, so please tell us when you order. Our vegetarian and vegan guide explains every option in detail.

Catering for Belmore and Canterbury Groups

We do more than dinner bookings. We cater for weddings, birthdays, poojas, community celebrations, and workplace events across Canterbury-Bankstown.

Our catering uses the same recipes and hand-folded momo we serve in the restaurant, not a scaled-down version. If you are planning something for a Belmore or Canterbury community group, temple, school, or workplace, call us ahead to talk it through.

Dishes that work well for a crowd include:

  • Momo platters — easy to share and always popular.
  • Thali sets — a complete meal that suits mixed tastes.
  • Sekuwa — grills well in quantity and travels nicely.
  • Fully vegetarian or vegan spreads — available with advance notice.

We can scale from twenty guests to a few hundred. Call (02) 9787 3769 to plan your menu.

  4. Order two or three dishes to share rather than one each.
  5. Tell us your spice level. We cook mild for children and hot for those who want it.
  6. Ask about live music nights if you want to make it an occasion.

A Local Kitchen for Nepali Families in Canterbury-Bankstown

Canterbury-Bankstown is home to one of the larger Nepali communities in Sydney. Many families settled here for the same reasons everyone does: affordable housing, good transport, and neighbours from every corner of the world.

For those families, we try to be more than a restaurant. Our staff speak Nepali and English. Our tables fit grandparents, parents, and children together. And our menu holds the dishes people actually grew up eating, not a shortened version made for unfamiliar palates.

We see the same faces every week, and we know many orders before they are placed. That is the part we are proudest of.
